GymStarterGuide shares general information about exercise and nutrition for healthy adults. Please read this page before you act on anything you find here.

Not medical advice

Nothing on this website is medical advice, a diagnosis or a treatment plan. We are not doctors, registered dietitians or certified personal trainers. Reading our guides does not create a professional relationship between you and us.

Talk to a doctor before you start exercising or change your diet, especially if you:

  • have a heart, lung, kidney, joint or bone condition, diabetes, high blood pressure or any other medical condition;
  • are pregnant or have recently given birth, or are breastfeeding;
  • are taking medication, or have an injury or pain;
  • have, or have had, an eating disorder, or find counting calories stressful;
  • are under 18 or over 65, or have been inactive for a long time.

If your own healthcare professional gives you different advice, follow theirs.

Exercise carries risk

Strength training and other exercise can cause injury, even when you do everything right. Start light, learn the movements, rest between sessions and stop if something hurts, if you feel dizzy, or if you have chest pain or trouble breathing. In an emergency, call your local emergency number straight away. Our written and animated descriptions of exercises are simplified. They cannot see you, so they cannot check your technique. A qualified coach can do that in person.

Nutrition information and our calculator

Our calorie, macro and sugar figures are estimates based on published equations and on guidelines from health organisations. Real needs vary from person to person. The calculator is for healthy adults aged 18 to 80. It is not suitable for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, who have a medical condition that affects diet, or who have an eating disorder. We do not recommend very low calorie diets, and the calculator will not suggest one.

Results vary

We do not promise any particular result, such as weight loss, muscle gain or strength. Progress depends on your body, your health, your sleep, your diet, your training and many other things.

Accuracy and sources

We work hard to be accurate and we link to the official sources behind our numbers. Guidance changes, and mistakes happen. Check the original source if a number matters to you, and tell us if you find an error at hello@thegymstarterguide.com.

Our pages link to other websites that we do not control, and we are not responsible for their content. A link is not an endorsement. Advertising on this site is supplied by third parties. We do not choose individual ads and we do not endorse the products they promote. Brand and product names belong to their owners and are used only to describe things.

Limit of liability

To the extent the law allows, GymStarterGuide and its team are not liable for any loss, injury or damage that arises from your use of this website or from relying on its content. Nothing in this disclaimer limits any right that the law gives you and that cannot be excluded.
